Bayani Tour is the brainchild of Jannelle So and Josie Castro on behalf of GK-USA, the US branch of Gawad Kalinga, a Philippine-based poverty alleviation and nation-building movement. Bayani Tour is a series of immersion tours that brings Filipino Americans to the Philippines through a 3-part tour that shows them how much fun can be had in the homeland, exposes the beauty of the countryside by taking the group to a different island, and highlights how Gawad Kalinga helps those in poverty. When I first saw the flyer for the tour in 2012, I felt that not only was it a great idea, but believed in it so much that I wanted dearly to be a part of it. I created the logo, the website (undergoing reconstruction), and did all the social media posting (Facebook, Twitter, & Instagram). During the tours, I took the photographs and did live social media updating. Although Bayani Tour is on a hiatus as we’re trying to figure out how to better approach the direction of the program, this series of tours will be seen as the best way to see the Philippines as a new generation Filipino American.
